STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship – Expression of Interest 2026
Monday 8th June, 2026
The E.A.Milne Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Hull invites Expressions of Interest (EoI) for an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship to be held at the Milne Centre. These fellowships enable early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a strong, independent research programme. The Ernest Rutherford Fellowships are intended for early career researchers who do not have an academic position.
The Milne Centre for Astrophysics brings together experts that study the evolution of structure in the Universe ranging from stars through to galaxies and galaxy clusters, right up to the largest structures in the cosmos. Our work includes astrochemistry & astrobiology, stellar nucleosynthesis, galaxy formation and evolution, large-scale structure and galaxy clusters, pulsars and gravitational waves, and neutrino physics. We employ observations, theory and computational methods, and artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in collaboration with our international partners. We are inviting EoIs from candidates with a research interest overlapping with ours.
Expressions of Interest from all qualified candidates are welcome, independent of their background. The University of Hull is committed to supporting, developing, and promoting equality and diversity in all practices and activities, establishing an inclusive culture free from discrimination. These principles will be applied to the STFC’s Ernest Rutherford Fellowship 2026 selection and support process. Permission to collect data to monitor this will be requested after receiving the EoIs.
Expressions of Interest must be sent to MilneCentre@hull.ac.uk using the subject line “Rutherford Fellowship EoI” by 24th July 2026.

We encourage you to get in touch well before the deadline so that we can support you in developing your Expression of Interest.
The Milne Centre panel will inform candidates whether or not they have been chosen as the Milne Centre candidate by August 5th, and request confirmation from the chosen candidate by Aug 17th. We will then work with the chosen candidate and the Research Office Team to get the application ready for internal approval by Sept 22nd, so that our Research Office can do the final submission in time.
